Direct answer

What am I paying for with a private ADHD assessment?

A private ADHD assessment buys you a comprehensive clinical assessment by a registered specialist, with self-referral, a choice of clinician and appointment time, a written report and a follow-up discussion. You are paying for the assessment — not for a diagnosis, and not for medication.

  • Same clinical standard as the NHS: NICE NG87
  • Self-referral, no GP letter required
  • Report and follow-up included in our fee
  • Outcome is never guaranteed

What the fee covers

  • Pre-assessment questionnaires for you and an informant
  • 2–3 hour specialist clinical assessment (longer for children)
  • Structured interview (DIVA-5 for adults)
  • Review of school reports and collateral information
  • Written report with formulation and recommendations
  • Follow-up call to discuss the report

How private and NHS pathways differ

Both pathways should follow NICE NG87. The main differences are cost, referral route, timescales and how prescribing is arranged afterwards. NHS services are free at the point of use and are an entirely valid route; private assessment is an alternative some people choose for timing or choice of clinician.

Choosing a private ADHD clinic

Before booking any provider, check:

  • Clinician names, qualifications and professional registration (e.g. GMC, GPhC, NMC, HCPC)
  • Whether diagnosis follows a full clinical assessment, not just questionnaires
  • What is included in the price and what costs extra
  • Regulatory status (e.g. CQC registration in England)
  • Refund, complaints and cancellation policies
  • What happens if medication is recommended

After a private diagnosis

If ADHD is diagnosed you receive recommendations and, where appropriate, can book a medication assessment. Whether an NHS GP later takes over prescribing under shared care is a decision for the individual practice and cannot be guaranteed.

Not sure an assessment is right for you?Take the free 3-minute adult screening questionnaire (ASRS v1.1). It's a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
