Direct answer

What is ADHD titration?

ADHD titration is the process of starting medication at a low dose and adjusting it gradually, with regular reviews of benefit, side effects, blood pressure, pulse and weight, until the most effective tolerable dose is found. It typically takes several weeks to a few months.

  • Reviews usually every 2–4 weeks
  • Typically 3–6 reviews (varies)
  • £199 per review (prescriptions included)
  • Led by an ADHD specialist prescriber

What happens during titration

After a medication assessment, you start a low dose. At each review, the prescriber asks about symptom change, side effects, sleep and appetite, and checks blood pressure, pulse and weight. The dose is adjusted, or the medicine changed, as needed.

How long does titration take?

Most people need several reviews over two to four months, but this varies with response and the medicine used.

What if medication doesn't work?

The prescriber may adjust the dose, switch to a different medicine, or review whether medication is right for you.

After titration

Once stable, you move to periodic monitoring. You can ask your GP whether they will consider shared care; this is not guaranteed.
