Inattentive ADHD Symptoms

Direct answer

What are the inattentive symptoms of ADHD?

Inattentive ADHD symptoms are persistent difficulties sustaining attention, following through, organising, keeping track of things and resisting distraction — beyond what is expected for a person's age and present since childhood. When enough of these symptoms are present without significant hyperactivity-impulsivity, it is called predominantly inattentive presentation.

  • Nine recognised inattention symptoms
  • Must be persistent and impairing
  • Often less visible, so recognised later
  • Common in girls and women
  • Everyday forgetfulness alone is not ADHD

The nine inattention symptoms

  • Often misses details or makes careless mistakes
  • Often struggles to sustain attention in tasks or conversations
  • Often seems not to listen when spoken to directly
  • Often does not follow through on instructions or finish tasks
  • Often has difficulty organising tasks and time
  • Often avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort
  • Often loses things needed for tasks
  • Is often easily distracted
  • Is often forgetful in daily activities

How inattention can look in adults

In adults this may show up as missed deadlines, unfinished projects, difficulty with paperwork and bills, losing track in meetings, chronic lateness or relying heavily on lists and reminders to compensate. Many people describe having to work much harder than peers to achieve the same.

When it may not be ADHD

Poor concentration is common in anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, stress, thyroid problems and some medicines. ADHD requires a lifelong pattern from childhood across settings. This is why assessment considers other explanations rather than relying on a checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is inattentive ADHD the same as ADD?

'ADD' is an older term. Today it is described as ADHD, predominantly inattentive presentation.

Can you have ADHD without being hyperactive?

Yes. Some people meet criteria for inattention only.

Why is inattentive ADHD diagnosed later?

It is less disruptive and less visible, so it is often missed in childhood, especially when a person compensates well.
